The CISD Board of Trustees added one year to Dr. Don Stockton’s contract Jan. 20. The contract extends his employment through Dec. 31, 2019. Stockton thanked board members at the meeting for their support.
“This is my 29th year in Conroe, so it’s my life,” Stockton said at the meeting. “There are so many people who give their time to our school district; there are so many people who spend most of their life doing something they love, and I’m one of those people.”
Trustees have granted Stockton a one-year extension at each annual review since 2009. The newest contract gives Stockton a raise to $343,000 annually. Stockton also gets a $1,500-per-month stipend for all “reasonable and necessary expenses” as part of his job. The district will no longer pay into an annual retirement fund starting in 2015, but the district will put in a contribution to the Texas Teacher Retirement System.
“He did not ask for a raise,” board member Melanie Bush said. “I will tell you that we do an evaluation and he does a self-evaluation. It was very interesting being a first-time board member.”
Bush said she supports the contract extension and Stockton as superintendent.
“He’s been a wonderful superintendent,” she said. “We’ve definitely reaped the benefits. The district is growing exponentially.”
Board President John Husbands agreed with Bush, saying the district has grown from 38,000 students and 43 campuses to almost 57,000 students and 60 campuses.
“I know of no other fast-growth district that has consistently maintained top academic performance and financial transparency while lowering the tax rate significantly,” Husbands said. “Dr. Stockton is not only the longest-tenured, large-district superintendent in Texas, but he has also consistently increased performance on all fronts, both financial and academic. We could not be prouder of him or our district.”
Stockton was first appointed as CISD superintendent in August 2003. Before that he served as interim superintendent, assistant superintendent and several other positions within the district.
