Woodlands Parkway bridge expansion delayed yet again

The Woodlands Parkway bridge expansion is facing further delays after weather and corrections to previously done work caused unforeseen delays, according to Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Deidrea Samuels.

The third lane opening has been pushed back from late January to early March and substantial completion of the project is not expected until late April or early May.

The expansion of the one-mile stretch between Grogan’s Mill Road and Panther Creek Drive from four to six lanes, which was originally supposed to be completed in December 2013, has faced what seems like an endless list of obstacles.

After months of delays and accrued liquidated damages fees, TxDOT found the contractor, Menade, Inc. in default, essentially firing them.

The project was stalled for more than three months before a new contractor, Texas Sterling Construction Company, was hired.

Texas Sterling originally estimated that they would be able to open the third lane by the end of January, but they are now saying an opening date in March is more likely.

“As they continue to work on the project, they have encountered a few unforeseen circumstances such as weather and a few things done or left by the previous contractor that need to be corrected, thus extending the schedule,” Samuels said.
