With Government Contracts its not What You Know

That lady who was invited by Judge Craig Doyal to offer opening prayer in April 6th Montgomery County Commissioners Court apparently has connections in heaven and earth. That lady is Ms. Mary Hammer-Menzel of MHM Consulting a Houston based business consultant.
A 2008 posting on the web based local entertainment and events site eventful.com advertises the charter meeting of something called HOUSTON SMALL BUSINESS ADVISORS.
In the posting, accessible online Hammer-Menzel and associate Don Aaron promote themselves as “respected Houston business consultants”. According to Hammer-Menzel, “The sole purpose of HSBA is to provide individual business owners with introductions to decision-makers that lead to contracts”.
ITS NOT WHAT YOU KNOW
For those ordinary run of the mill local government suppliers dreaming of a juicy contract, a road construction contract for example, Hammer-Menzel asks, – “Have you ever wondered how some companies keep getting new projects? It’s simple, it’s who they know. It’s not enough to be certified, registered in supplier databases or attend supplier conferences. You need access to decision-makers, the power people. Tired of driving all over town, burning gas and spending months in endless meetings? Spend less time and get more results.”
Apparently, if taxpayers think that the checks and balances they assume are in place in local government are sufficient to create a level playing field for all bidders for road projects or otherwise Hammer-Menzel has news for you. It’s who you know, the HSBA, under Hammer-Menzel promises members will ” directly benefit from the long-term relationships these consultants have developed with prime contractors, city/county/state/federal organizations and key civic leaders.”
Mark Bosma, Call your office! You may be a Tool of Satan too if you try to award contracts based on merit alone. Really, get with the program.
