Township public comment sparks fireworks over road bond

Continued focus on the $280 million road bond and the investigation surrounding the referendum caused tempers to boil over during public comment of The Woodlands Township Board of Directors meeting Wednesday.
Former District 15 state Rep. Steve Toth addressed Board Chairman Bruce Tough directly regarding a recent email blast by Tough as part of his campaign. Tough has filed for re-election in the board’s November election facing opponent Laura Fillault.
In the email, Tough references the current investigation by the Texas Rangers and special prosecutor involving Montgomery County Commissioners Court for possibly violating the Texas Open Meetings Act regarding the Nov. 3 road bond referendum.
Tough’s emails also stated “a few others brought into the discussion included Ken Vaughn of the Montgomery County Tea Party, former District 15 state Rep. Steve Toth and The Woodlands Township board member Gordy Bunch.”
Toth said Tough’s email “(accused) me and Gordy Bunch of wrongdoing on the recent bond fiasco.”
“While your email recklessly attempts to infer wrongdoing, you conveniently left out two elected officials of Commissioner Court who are your friends and you support,” Toth told Tough.
Tough’s email notes that while “there appears to be good and strong evidence that these emails involving the PAC, political consultant Marc Davenport and county officials may have violated the Texas Open Meeting Act,” he states a “grand jury will determine if a crime was committed and who was complicit in such a violation.”
Toth continued and said Tough “maliciously (libeled)” him along with Bunch and Vaughn.
At that point, Tough interjected saying Toth was wrong.
“I’m not going to listen to you,” Tough said. “You know that deal stinks, you know it lacks transparency.”
Board member John McMullan and Bunch spoke up and told Tough he should allow Toth to continue.
