Anti-toll groups release Voter Guide, endorsements
Toll issue could sway vote in many key, contested races
|
(San Antonio, TX – Wednesday, February 3, 2016) As voters contemplate who to vote for in the upcoming March 1 primary, anti-toll groups Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom (TURF) and Texans for Toll-free Highways (TTH), Political Action Committee, released its Voter Guide and endorsements, respectively.
Many incumbents received poor grades on TURF’s Legislative Report Cards and their challengers, in contrast, received high grades. Over 300 grassroots groups statewide rely on TURF and TTH for transportation issues. In the 2014 election cycle, anti-toll candidates swept key races with the biggest prize at the top with the ascension of Governor Greg Abbott.
The toll issue is particularly thorny in the race for House District 2 where incumbent Dan Flynn is facing anti-toll challenger Bryan Slaton, who led the fight to defeat the proposed private Blacklands tollway from Garland to Greenville. Speaker Joe Straus faces a strong challenge from two very strong anti-toll opponents, Jeff Judson and Sheila Bean, in House District 121 where the US 281 toll road battle has riled residents in the corridor for over a decade.
Straus came in late in the game in 2015 claiming credit for converting the project back to non-toll at the eleventh hour, but his past committee chair of House Transportation, Larry Phillips, consistently blocked anti-toll bills for several sessions, leading to a prolonged anti-toll battle in San Antonio. Many lay the blame for the tolling of 281 at the feet of Straus.
The two groups will be carefully watching races across Texas and weighing in on the toll issue to make sure voters know where the candidates stand. |
TURF is a non-partisan, grassroots, all-volunteer group defending citizens’ concerns with toll road policy, public private partnerships, and eminent domain abuse. TURF promotes pro-taxpayer, pro-freedom, & non-toll transportation solutions. For more information or to support the work of TURF, please visit www.TexasTURF.org.
