Devon Energy has announced closure of its Woodlands office as a small part of its current reorganization including 1000 layoffs, only 60 remained in The Woodlands.
Devons’ exit from the Woodlands is notable as the last link with the memory of Mitchel Energy and Development which Devon acquired in a 2002 merger. Mitchell Energy was the namesake of Woodlands Founder George Mitchell.
For those interested, The Handbook of Texas has written a very informative account of George Mitchell’s life and historic accomplishments through Mitchel Energy.
The handbook entry also includes this surprising comment regarding Mitchell’s approach to business not mentioned in George Mitchell’s Vision for The Woodlands hosted on the Woodlands Township site.
“Mitchell was noted for making extensive use of public money, government funding sources, and tax breaks to develop his projects.”
