In response to criticism over the county budget and its process, County Judge Craig Doyal defended members of Commissioners Court, saying Tuesday that its members “do a great job managing the budget.”

Woodlands attorney Eric Yollick, who has been vocal about not being allowed to speak during the county’s budget hearings last month, again addressed the court, which prompted Doyal’s remark.

The proposed county budget for 2016-17 is $345 million, with a property tax rate of 47 cents per $100 valuation. The proposed budget is a 3.9 percent increase over the 2016 budget of $332 million.

After the meeting, Yollick said he was disappointed in Doyal’s reaction.

“He kicked dirt in the face of the taxpayer,” Yollick said. “I was stunned.”
